impulse (HP Pavilion dv7)
Summary
Bought as a portable games machine. Runs hot, but never any real issue. Continued to use as a steamlink host for playing games on TV.
Notes
- Special SATA cables are probably unobtanium now. Already expensive when I first got the machine.
- Battery isn't terribly useful and runs down if left to sit any amount of time. In the past I resorted to manually jump charging the battery because it would get low enough to not be recognized. Now it mostly just causes windows to shut down immediately despite being plugged in on the first boot.
- Machine runs quite hot when gaming. Aluminum palm rest and keyboard bezels get hot to touch.
- Plastic above the front facing speakers will break under normal use.
- Has beats audio. Can't be beats…

A new gaming laptop
I think I found this through this slickdeals post.
Purchased new from HP as dv7t A1L96AV. Bought second HDD cable kit ($30).
The main selling points were the Full HD screen, dedicated GPU, and Blu-ray drive.
