Backup Strategy

Aside from redundant arrays for storage my goal is to backup to two mostly offline sets of disks. The first can be local and stored inside. The second will use some form of car safe to avoid loss from structure damage or home theft. These disks use ext4 filesystem. I don't use ZFS here because it's relatively new and I hope this can prevent silent corruption if something were to affect my ZFS pools.

Backup of my personal data is handled by plugging disks in. They will be automounted and borg backup is run to create a new archive in the repo. This automation is documented in .

Backup of family machines use the windows backup facilities and an external disk. These could later be imported into my personal data, but currently this isn't accomplished.

Backup of mobile devices should be handled via some sync service then pulled to my regular backups. Syncthing seems capable, but I'm not totally satisfied with it. This remains to be implemented.

This is my general data flow for backup as I intended it. As of writing none of the Syncthing setup is done.
